Martin Veltkamp (4 May 1959) was born in Haarlem as the eldest son in a middle-class family. Martin showed great interest in plants and their significance with regard to creating atmosphere in a given space, and his choice of study was almost naturally garden and landscape architecture at the Rijks Hogere School voor Tuin- en Landschapsinrichting in Boskoop.
The course was strongly oriented towards the official practising of the profession, but Martin was able to enlarge his knowledge of soil science, botany and technical insight here. After completing the course, he became a skilled designer thanks to self-tuition. Garden designer Martin developed his own unique style in designing gardens based primarily on his own individual views on arranging and filling in spaces.
A Martin Veltkamp garden design today is the end result of working according to a well-considered and complex system. Despite this, the product is a pure and unaffected landscape.
Nonetheless, Martin’s biggest challenge is to persuade others to share these garden ideas before putting them into practice in his designs. By familiarising clients with his principles, Martin wants to ensure that they experience the shock of recognition and feel truly at home in his gardens..
